Abstract

Collaborative robot tasks in manufacturing often involve manually placing and recording the robot in various positions throughout the intended task. However, existing methods for programming robot have been shown to cause physical strain and confusion for operators due to ergonomic factors and non-intuitive interface. With the emergence of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), mixed reality technologies are a promising method to alleviate the physical and cognitive workload of collaborative robotic programming. This research aims to evaluate AR and VR interfaces with standardized test methods and metrics for programming collaborative robots in manufacturing settings. By programming a standardized manufacturing task board using the native Teach Pendant (TP), AR, and VR interfaces, we aim to measure human-robot interaction (HRI) metrics to evaluate success rates and cognitive load on operators. This paper discusses the pilot study results of TP programming phase and provides an overview of the AR and VR interfaces that will be further investigated in future work.
