NIST in Missouri

$91M

in recent and planned financial awards from NIST to organizations in the state of Missouri since 2021

Advanced manufacturing

  • The NIST CHIPS for America program will provide up to $20 million to semiconductor manufacturer GlobalWafers to establish a manufacturing facility in St. Peters for microelectronics used in defense and aerospace.
  • In FY 2023, NIST provided nearly $20 million to the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla for construction at its Manufacturing Technology and Innovation Campus, a space for industry and academia to collaborate on new materials and manufacturing methods.
  • Missouri manufacturers rely on NIST reference materials and calibrations to check the composition and purity of solders, alloys, glass, ceramics, cements, polymers and more. This saves time and money and provides manufacturers with the highest quality control, ensuring that products meet customer specifications.
  • Since FY 2020, Missouri Enterprise, part of the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership, has received nearly $14 million in federal funds from NIST, which spurred more than $7 million in nonfederal investments, to advance manufacturers with productivity improvement, ISO/quality management and innovative growth services.

When Cooper Gear & Manufacturing experienced production decreases due to difficulty maintaining climate control, Missouri Enterprise helped with an energy audit, tailored energy management systems and assistance applying for an energy upgrade grant. As a result, the company has realized $3 million in new or retained sales and $100,000 in cost savings.

Biotechnology, life sciences and health care

  • In FY 2023 and 2024, NIST granted nearly $24 million to the University of Missouri for a next-generation reactor that provides isotopes for cardiac and cancer treatment and research, and is also used for materials science research.
  • NIST reference materials help Missouri’s biotechnology industry innovate more quickly with quantitative analytical measurement tools for nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites and cell systems so that manufacturers can monitor and improve production methods and products.
  • Missouri researchers and manufacturers in every sector rely on the NIST Mass Spectrometry Data Center for data libraries that speed molecule identification and quality control. This data is so widely trusted that it is packaged with nearly every mass spectrometer sold.
  • NIST’s calibration materials for magnetic resonance imaging help medical researchers develop quantitative tests that can rapidly determine if treatments for glioblastoma and other cancers are working, speeding clinical decisions.

Food and agriculture

  • NIST’s library of reference materials helps to ensure that soils are accurately assessed for contaminants and that foods grown or eaten in the U.S. are safe from contaminants and allergens that could cause illness to consumers. Missouri companies also rely on NIST reference materials to check their test methods and help them comply with the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act.
  • NIST develops and updates inspection procedures and trains state regulatory officials on how to verify the net contents of packaged foods to protect consumers and businesses and ensure fair trading for grocery stores, restaurants and customers.

Public safety, health and resilience

  • In 2024, Missouri was struck by 42 tornadoes of EF1 or stronger with winds over 86 miles per hour. NIST researchers and collaborators have improved the design of buildings to perform better under high wind conditions. Our recommendations are being incorporated into codes that will make new buildings safer.
  • In FY 2024, NIST provided $2.5 million to the University of Missouri for research on flood risk resiliency and inland waterway navigation.
  • NIST provides near real-time identification of illicit street drugs submitted by state partners. Reports on trends in detected drugs along with never-before-seen substances are released to the public each month.

CHIPS Funding

GlobalWafers (Missouri)

Award Amount
$20 million in direct funding
CHIPS Organization
CHIPS Program Office
The CHIPS for America award will provide GlobaWafers with $20 million in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to support the construction of a 300mm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer-manufacturing facility, critical for advanced semiconductor applications.

Optimizing Operations: Cost Effective Equipment's Path to Greater Efficiency

Reported Year
2024
As Cee prepared for a significant expansion and relocation to a larger facility, it became evident that maintaining momentum required enhanced efficiencies to keep pace with growth. While exploring the many possibilities within lean, they came across an advertisement for a Lean 101 simulation offered by Missouri Enterprise, part of the MEP National
