Abstract

This bulletin summarizes NIST Special Publication 800-68, Guidance for Securing Microsoft Windows XP Systems for IT Professionals: A NIST Security Configuration Checklist. The bulletin discusses the security components offered by the Windows XP Professional system, and the guidance and recommendations that are included in SP 800-68 concerning the installation, back up, and patching procedures for Windows XP systems. The bulletin summarizes the four operational environments that ITL has identified to help developers to target their checklists to the security baselines that are associated with the different environments, and to help users select the checklists that are most appropriate for their operating environments. Information is provided on the selection of security templates, the NIST checklists program, and the role of checklists within an integrated information technology security program.
