Abstract

This report contains a summary of research conducted to develop a standard or accepted set of thermophysical properties for the aviation kerosene, JP-8. This report is the culmination of a three year effort that included the participation of most of the staff of the Thermophysical Properties Division of NIST, and is an illustration of the integrated approach of experimental measurements and correlation. The ultimate result of this work is the development of models to represent the thermophysical properties of aviation kerosenes described under the umbrella names of Jet-A and JP-8. Measurements described here included the chemical analysis of finished fuels, studies of the thermal decomposition of fuels and components, measurement of the volatility, density, speed of sound, viscosity and thermal conductivity of finished fuels and their selected components. The modeling efforts include the development of equations of state for a suite of potential surrogate components, and the development of models based on the Helmholtz free energy equation of state.
