Abstract

Cold neutron prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) was used to determine the amount of hydrogen in thin film Mg hydrides with varying hydrogenation times. The results suggest that the hydrogenation in the Mg thin films remains unsaturated even after 48 hours, contrary to what was indicated by indirect hydrogen measurement methods. To establish PGAA as an effective combinatorial methodology for thin film hydrides, a continuously varying composition gradient of MgyTi(1-y)Hx was prepared and analyzed by both PGAA and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) to obtain the variation of the molar ratio of Mg, Ti and H with a 5 mm spatial resolution.
