Abstract
I study the origins of the applied, macroscopic, and local electromagnetic fields by a statistical-mechanical method. In order to obtain the macroscopic fields from the microscopic fields we use a relevant statistical-density function for ensemble averaging. I present novel equations for the time-dependent local fields as functions of the applied field, polarization, and macroscopic field
