Abstract

Sensors are used in a broad range of applications, from machinery condition monitoring and industrial automation to patient condition monitoring in hospitals.  With the rapid development of field networks and smart sensor technologies, the networking of smart transducers is a very economical and appealing solution for distributed measurement and control applications.  The emerging interface standards, IEEE P1451, Smart Transducer Interface for Sensors and Actuators, will ease the connectivity of transducers to control networks, data acquisition cards, instrumentation systems, and microprocessors. This set of interface standards will provide a mechanism to facilitate interoperability between sensors and networks.  It will also render additional benefits, such as the self-identification of sensors, self-configuration and documentation, easy maintenance, and increased data and system reliability. This paper briefly describes the evolution and relationship of the family of four proposed P1451 standards that deal with different aspects of transducer interfacing.  The proposed standards include communication protocols between transducers and microprocessors, network-independent information model for smart transducers, the multidrop transducer bus, and mixed-mode transducers.
