Abstract
The Scalable Parallel Systems and Applications Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been experimenting with Linux-based clusters of computers. These clusters are used for both the running of computationally intensive programs and evaluating the performance aspects of clusters. The clusters are based on Intel Pentium-Pro and Pentium II microprocessors. The machines are connected with a Fast-Ethernet network, and a subset of the machines is also connected with an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. This paper describes the configuration of the cluster machines in both network environments and an overview of its workload performance characteristics.Citation
