Structural Instability in the B2-Type Ordered Alloys: Zr(Ru,Rh) and Zr(Ru,Pd)

Abstract

Low temperature properties of B2-type solid solutions have been measured in the quasi-binary systems Zr(Ru,Rh) and Zr (Ru,Pd). A continuous transition from brittle to ductile behavior occurs in both of these systems as the B2 phases become unstable with respect to martensite formation. The occurence of superconductivity in the regions of incipient instability is attributed to phonon softening accompaned by am increasing density of electronic states. The structural instabilities are apparently responsible for exceptional wear resistance and improved mechanical properties.
