Abstract
Current edge-chip material testing procedures involve applying an increasing perpendicular force near a specimen edge until a chip forms. In this report, the effects of applied forces that are not perpendicular are studied, including quantitative changes in resulting chip geometries and differences in the slopes of force vs. edge distance curves (edge toughness). The results are particularly useful in fractographic analyses of chipping failures. It was found that geometric effects alone are sufficient to determine the force angle that caused a chip to form, while force vs. edge distance plots are required to forensically estimate force magnitudesCitation
