Femtosecond pulse amplification by coherent addition in a passive optical cavity

Abstract

With the capability of simultaneous control of repetition and carrier frequencies, phase coherent superposition of a collection of successive pulses from a modelocked laser can be realized. An optical cavity can be used for coherent delayand constructive interference of sequential pulses until a cavity dump is enabled to switch out the amplified pulse. This approach will lead to an amplification process through decimation high pulse rates while preserving the overall coherence from the original oscillator Detailed calculations show the limiting effects of intra -cavity dispersion and indicate that enhancement of sub-100 femtosecond pulses to micro joule energies is experimentally feasible.ons show the limiting effects of intra-cavity dispersion and indicate thatenhancement of sub-100 feint ond pulses to micro-joule energies is experimentally feasible.
