Abstract
A time-dependent theory of cone emission for near-resonant propagation of laser light in an atomic vapor is presented which includes full propagation for the laser and side-bands in a non-linar two-level medium. The density matrix equations for the dipole moment and populationare solved in the dressed atomic frame. The polarization source terms are good to order (γ/R), where γ is a damping constant and R is the generalized Rabi frequency. Analytical plane wave solutions and numerical cylindrically symmetric propagations with diffraction are presented. It is shown that simple cone emission theories that do not include diffraction can not describe the complex structure of cone emission.Citation
