Abstract

Following de Labachelerie, Nadagawa and Ohtsu (Ref. 6), we note the possibility to obtain saturated absoption spectra of a weakly-absorbing gas sample by placing it within an external high-finesse resonator. A principal disadvantage of this approach, the ready conversion of frequency noise into amplitude noise, can be totally avoided by rf detection methods when the rf modulation frequency is chosen to match the external cavity's free-spectural range. Excellent spectra are obtained from 5 ppm absorption by C2H2 in the 790 nm v1+ 3 v3 band.
