Abstract
The Manufacturing Systems Integration (MSI) project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is developing a system architecture that incorporates an integrated production planning and control environment. The major activity of the MSI project is the cyclic implementation, testing, and refinement ofd architecture. The MSI system is designed to function as a testbed for production management architectures integrating process planning, production planning, and shop-floor control. The verification of this architecture will be via a demonstration of the production of selected parts from multiple manufacturing domains, using either actual or emulated shop floor equipment or any combination of both.
This document details the initial architecture formulated by the project members and summarizes its relationships with other manufacturing architecture specification efforts. It briefly describes the initial implementation of the architecture and limitations of the architecture found thereby.
