EBIT Vacuum System
The EBIT is enclosed in the vacuum system to shield it from the atmosphere. The vacuum serves two purposes: it reduces the heat load on the liquid helium bath and it prevents gas molecules from entering the EBIT. Such gas molecules would disrupt the electron beam and knock ions out of the trap.
