Malcolm Ammons (Fed)

Research Structural Engineer

Dr. Malcolm Ammons is a research structural engineer in the Structures Group of the Materials and Structural Systems Division in the Engineering Laboratory. His research interests are broadly related to the behavior and design of structural systems for damage mitigation from extreme loading events. At NIST, he is currently leading a research project entitled “Acceptance Criteria and Modeling Parameters for Structural Components under Multiple Hazards”. The project aims to develop acceptance criteria for structures subjected to extreme winds and loads that can cause disproportionate collapse. His previous work at NIST involved small-scale experimental testing to support the design and assessment of structures subjected to fire.

Dr. Ammons serves on the team investigating the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida. As part of this investigation, he supports the Building and Code History and Evidence Collection and Preservation projects.
