To establish normative guidance and certification pathways for the compression of fingerprint imagery.
In July of 2009 NIST in partnership with the FBI commenced an investigation on the use of JPEG 2000 for compressing fingerprint imagery with the ultimate goal to establish a normative guidance and certification pathway for the compression of 1000 ppi friction ridge imagery.
NIST is conducting conformance testing of JPEG 2000 CODEC's that can be utilized by stakeholders to ensure compatibility and utility of these images.
The certification process entails encoding a set of unencoded images in the dataset, decoding the encoded images in it, and returning the output files to NIST for analysis.
