Summary

Rapid DNA Typing technology allows DNA typing to be performed within a fully integrated system (swab in—profile out). The process can be completed in under 90 minutes with minimal training for staff.

Applications include DNA typing at a mass fatality scene, crime scene, reference sample data banking at the point of arrest, human trafficking, and other applications where a rapid and mobile solution is needed.

A photo of a rapid DNA typing instrument. A screen controls the interface and a chip is loaded into the instrument.

Rapid DNA instruments can type a DNA sample in 90 minutes. The resulting DNA profile can uploaded and searched against appropriate law enforcement databases.

The Applied Genetics Group at NIST has been involved in testing integrated rapid DNA instruments since the prototype stage in the fall of 2012 and began robustly testing the maturity of these rapid DNA instruments in 2013. The three maturity assessments conducted by NIST focused on the genotyping success for the current CODIS core STR markers (at the time of each assessment), peak height ratio balance, base pair sizing precision, and stutter artifacts for each of the instruments and corresponding STR kit chemistries. Success was measured by complete and concordant genotyping compared to truth data from traditional laboratory analysis.

The details of our efforts in Rapid DNA Interlaboratory Testing can be found on STRBase.
