Design and Development of a Dictionary Translator

Abstract

The lack of a traceable set of terminologies to describe electronic components has long been identified by the electronic industry as a significant problem. As part of its Electronic Commerce of Component Information (ECCI) project, NIST's Electronic Information Technology Group has been involved in research on tools and methodologies for accessing data dictionaries via on-line computer networks such as the World Wide Web (WWW). One facet of this research involved working with the industry consortia, known as the Silicon Integration Initiative (SI2), to develop a software translator that could convert existing electronic data dictionaries into a standard dictionary format. Such a software program would provide a basic part of the infrastructure necessary to enable electronic commerce of electronic components. This paper describes the design and development of the dictionary translation tool. The translator (referred to as 2CIDS) accepts input data in one of two different formats and outputs a single dictionary standard format based on the Component Information Dictionary Standard (CIDS).
