Abstract

The next generation of Product Data Exchange (PDE) standards will require the active participation of domain experts in the standards development process. Due to geographical separation and a lack of the XML expertise required to develop a high-quality data exchange standard, this requirement is often difficult to achieve. The resulting standards are often less than ideal, containing conflicts, ambiguities within the standard, and other problems. NIST is developing a software tool called Focus that addressed these issues. Focus is a distributed design and conferencing application which uses augmented reality to allow domain experts to come together to create data models regardless of location or knowledge of XML. This paper describes the initial user interface design and reasoning behind the application.
