Abstract

Along with the development and propagation of Information & Communication Technology (ICT), digital evidence becomes more common and crucial to solving various types of cases. In this environment, there have been a lot of activities to research and develop digital forensic technologies in order to acquire, extract, recover and analyze potential digital evidence. As a result of the active research endeavors, various tools (S/W and H/W) are being developed to support more efficient digital forensic activities, and they are used for a variety of purposes. As the use of digital forensic tools has become so popular and especially many tools providing same (or similar) functions exist in the digital forensic community, there has been a need to verify digital forensic tools with the range of functions, the accuracy of the implementation and so on. In response to this need, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) began establishing a system for digital forensic tool testing in 1999, and it is still actively being performed. In this paper, we introduce CFTT and CFReDS projects being performed at NIST including the current progress and future perspectives.
