Abstract

This letter is a response to a request from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for additional data to determine the effect of beyond design basis, thermal exposure on the seal materials of a Nuclear Assurance Corporation Legal Weight Truck (NAC LWT) spent fuel transportation cask. The specific information requested include the potential failure modes of the cask containment barrier and the quantity of released respirable particulates over a broad range of temperatures and pressures. NRC is sponsoring the scoping and feasibility study described in this letter to explore possible testing methodologies and resources which will be required to obtain the needed data.
