We describe NIST research on wavelength standards for optical fiber communications. We have developed transfer standrds that can be used to calibrate instruments in the 1510-1560 nm region and a investigating references for other regions.

We have measured the pressure-induced shift for 15 lines of the υ 1 + υ 3 rotational-vibrational band of acetylene 12C 2H 2. These lines are useful as Wavelength references in the 1510-1540-nm region. We find that the pressure shift varies from +0.008(2)
