Abstract

The 2004 Conference on IEEE 1588, Standard for a Precision clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and control Systems was hosted by NIST on September 27-29, and was co-sponsored with the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society.  More than seventy attendees participated in the conference, coming from diverse areas such as Instrumentation and measurement, Industrial automation, aerospace, power generation, semi-conductor manufacturing, and telecommunication.  The three-day event began with a tutorial on the IEEE 1588 standard.  The interoperability of components and devices was demonstrated by six companies and a university in an afternoon session inforemally debbed Plug Fest.  The demonstration showed that these devices could be synchronized to a master clock to sub-microsecond accuracy.  Some components and systems were able to achieve clock synchronization to within +/- 40 nanoseconds based on a master clock signal from a GPS antenna.  The technical sessions covered subjects from primary timing reference sources for IEEE 1588 systems, to high accuracy clock synchronization, to device and microchip requirements, adaptation, implementation, and application of IEEE 1588 in industrial automation, military, and telecommunications.
