Abstract

A pre-high school science program, Adventure In Science (AIS), has been running in the Gaithersburg, Maryland area for the past 33 years. It s President, Dr. Robert D. Shull, a scientist in the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), describes the goals and details of the program, the reasons for its success, and the assistance others can expect if they are interested in starting up a program in their area. This information is interspersed with several pictures of the young children participating in many of the various materials science activities to which they are introduced.
