Student Authority Job Opportunities

This serves as public notice for Student Trainee Positions in Computer Science and Information Technology under the Post-Secondary Student Program.

Positions:      Computer Scientist Trainee (ZP-2299-I/II) and IT Specialist Trainee (ZP-1599-I/II)

Job and Organization Description:  Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Information Technology Laboratory

Post-secondary positions provide for development and training in a specific field. Assignments become more responsible as the incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training.

Geographic Region:  Duty station will be Anywhere in the US

Salary Range:            For ZP-I:  $34,121 - $60,774 Per Year

                                    For ZP-2: $49,025 to $86,750 Per Year

Minimum Qualification:

Student Trainee Information Technology

For ZP-I Consideration:
You must be a student accepted for enrollment in a high school or General Education Diploma (GED) program or enrolled and seeking a degree.

For ZP-II Consideration: Graduate
You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree.

In additional to the above, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

Student Trainee Computer Science

For ZP-I Consideration:
You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree in Computer Science OR a degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science and at least 15 of the 30 semester hours include any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

For ZP-II Consideration: Graduate
You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree in Computer Science OR a degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science and at least 15 of the 30 semester hours include any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

In additional to the above, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

Promotion Eligibility: ZP-II

Time Limit of Position:  Term position, not to exceed 13 months, but may be extended up to four years

Potential for Conversion

  • Post-secondary students will initially be appointed to a term appointment in the competitive service for a period expected to last more than 1 year not to exceed 4 years. They may be non-competitively converted to a career or career-conditional appointment after completion of at least 640 hours of current continuous employment, the OPM qualification standards are met for the position, the course of study leading to a baccalaureate or graduate degree is achieved, and time-in-band requirements are met.
  • The appointment expires on the not-to-exceed date of the appointment unless it is extended by the hiring manager.
