Request for Information: NIST’s Assignments under Executive Order 14110 on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI

The comment period has closed on the NIST Request for Information (RFI) related to several of its responsibilities under Executive Order (EO) 14110 on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Read more about NIST’s assignments and plans under EO 14110.

NIST will continue to accept responses to the issues cited in the RFI, although timing will determine whether or not we can consider those comments due to the tight timetables in the Executive Order. Responses may be sent to ai-inquiries [at] nist.gov (ai-inquiries[at]nist[dot]gov) and should follow the formatting guidance outlined in Federal Register Notice 88 FR 88368

The RFI addressed multiple assignments outlined in the EO, including: develop a companion resource to the AI Risk Management Framework, NIST AI 100–1, for generative AI; develop guidelines for AI red teaming; guidance and benchmarks for evaluating and auditing AI capabilities; develop report on identifying and labeling synthetic content produced by AI systems; and establish a plan for global engagement on promoting and developing AI standards. Read announcement

Other assignments to NIST relate to companion resource to Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF), guidelines for agencies to evaluate the efficacy of differential-privacy-guarantee protections, synthetic nucleic acid sequencing, and supporting agencies' implementation of minimum risk-management practices are being addressed separately.
