The NFRL operates two systems for calorimetry measurements, one based on oxygen consumption calorimetry and one based on the consumption of fuel (primarily natural gas). Natural gas reference burners, part of the system for fuel consumption calorimetry, provide an accurate and precise source of chemical heat release as input to the system for oxygen consumption calorimetry. The reference burners allow for the mutual confirmation of both calorimetry measurement systems. Confirmation burns are routine experiments, designed to exercise all components of the system over the full range of anticipated heat release for any given fire test. These burns are used to confirm the anticipated performance of the calorimeter systems.
