SIX DAY #MYCYBERJOB SOCIAL MEDIA CHALLENGE

Throughout the week individuals and organizations around the world shared their short videos, pictures, and stories on social media using hashtags #MyCyberJob, #CyberCareerWeek, and #ChooseCyber.

KICK-OFF EVENT
Both the House & Senate Cybersecurity Caucuses, SANS|GIAC, and NICE started the week with a kick-off event to highlight Solutions to a Skilled & Diverse Cybersecurity Workforce on Monday, October 16th at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. 

US CYBER GAMES Season III DRAFT

The US Cyber Games conducted their Draft Day Event at District E, an e-sports arena in Washington, D.C. 30 cybersecurity athletes were drafted to the Season III US Cyber Team; 40+ athletes have been invited to participate in the US Cyber Games Pipeline Program; and 5 awards, including “MVP” and “All-Star”,  were distributed to Season II athletes.

CYBERSECURITY CAREERS CAPTURE THE FLAG COMPETITION

Congratulations to the winners, who scored highest in areas such as cryptography, networking, web applications, reconnaissance, and more!

  • 1st place: Daniel Tomov, Old Dominion University
  • 2nd place: Gage Mazaika, Old Dominion University
  • 3rd place: Prakhar Sah, Virginia Tech

KICK-OFF EVENT
The Congressional Career and Technical Education Caucus, Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus, SANS, and the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) started the week with a lunch and learn session on Exploring Cybersecurity Career Pathways to Build a Skilled & Diverse Cybersecurity Workforce on Monday, October 17th in Washington, D.C. Congressman Jim Langevin provided opening remarks.

In 2021, NICE announced a new name and new dates for Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week. We’ve dropped the “National” in our name to promote the need for a global cybersecurity workforce and moved the annual timing of the week to be held every third week in October. Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week was held October 18-23, 2021. Recap of National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week 2018: 

In 2018, Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week was held November 12-17, 2018. A diverse and creative array of events and activities occurred throughout the country during NCCAW, including company open houses, forums, discussions, speaker events, career fairs and presentations at schools and community and technical colleges. In addition to events, a host of videos, webinars, blog posts, Tweets and Twitter Chats, Instagram posts and YouTube videos broadcast the opportunities for a career in cybersecurity throughout the week. An overview of some of these activities are archived on the Resources from National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week 2018 Collaborators webpage.

2018 Key Activities

There were over 200 engagements directly impacting over 7500 people, in 42 states, and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Activities were also held in Bengaluru, Karnataka-India and Halifax, Nova Scotia-Canada.

Recap of the Inaugural National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week 2017:

Day 1: November 13, 2017 -  Kickoff Event:  Career Opportunities in Cybersecurity

The celebration kicked off with an event at the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence. Attendees heard from experts on how the cybersecurity community can effectively reach and encourage more students, graduates, and current workers to join the cybersecurity field. The National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week Cybersecurity Challenge, launched at the annual National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week Kick-off event, was a program to inspire and ignite interest in cybersecurity careers by enabling participants to test drive careers using a free online cybersecurity career exploration platform called the NSA Day of Cyber.

Students from 130 schools representing 24 states and 45 cities participated virtually and had the opportunity to interact with NSA Cybersecurity mentors, discover the skills and tools used by cybersecurity professionals, and explore the vast number of careers in cybersecurity.

The top five schools, based on highest student participation and completion of the introduction of the Day of Cyber are highlighted below:

Day 2: November 14, 2017 – Increasing Career Awareness of women, minorities, veterans, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented populations in the cybersecurity workforce.

Day 3: November 15, 2017 – Webinar highlighting Innovative Educational Approaches: Nontraditional Pathways of Apprenticeship and Cooperative Education.

In honor of National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week and National Apprenticeship Week, NICE hosted a webinar on methods to gain valuable work-based experience. Check out the recording here.      

Day 4: November 16, 2017 – Infusing Cybersecurity Across the Education Portfolio 

Day 5: November 17, 2017 – Identifying Academic and Career Pathways 

Day 6: November 18, 2017 – Increase Career Awareness through Informal Activities  

The week ended with an exciting interactive event at the National Cryptologic Museum. Visitors explored the museum, participated in hands-on activities and demonstrations, and learned more about the opportunities that can be found by exploring cybersecurity as a field of study or career choice.
