NCNR is acquiring two new cryogen-free superconducting magnets for use on neutron instruments. Mechanically cooled, these magnets will provide simple, reliable, high-field capabilities without the cost and operational complexity issues associated with conventional wet magnets. The first of these to be delivered, 12 T Dry, is a high-field magnet with an integrated dilution refrigerator. It is currently under commissioning.
12 T Dry Specs:
Later in 2025, NCNR is scheduled to receive 7 T Dry, a lower field but more versatile cryogen-free magnet
7T Dry Specs:
Both new magnets should be available for users upon resumption of NCNR scientific operations in 2026.
