The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is undertaking Structural Engineering Research for Reducing Risks Due to Earthquakes and Other Extreme Hazards. Post-earthquake fires and wildland fires currently represent risks due to these hazards. NIST is conducting a workshop to help identify measurement needs to inform future research activities in the area of Large Outdoor Fire Modeling. There is a particular need to identify and understand the measurement needs for implementation of technical solutions for such fires, which shall be achieved through greater use of existing technologies, development and deployment of emerging technologies, and use of fire protection design.
The intended audience comprises experts in the fire science, wildland fire modeling, atmospheric modeling, and high-performance computing communities.
The workshop agenda is expected to include the following discussion items:
- high-performance computing applied to outdoor fire modeling,
- incorporating micro- and macro-scale weather data into outdoor fire models,
- incorporating topography and terrain features into outdoor fire models,
- improving models for ember generation, lofting, and spot fire ignition,
- modeling wind-driven fire spread,
- modeling large-scale prescribed burn experiments, and
- modeling wind-tunnel experiments.
