AWARD CITATION
Drs. Satterfield and Rimmer are recognized for their creation of an internship program with Montgomery College designed to give students from underrepresented populations the experience of working at NIST alongside NIST staff. Under Satterfield and Rimmer's oversight, the program has grown to include internships across NIST and from multiple Montgomery College campuses. Originally designed to enable students to perform research alongside NIST scientists, the program has been expanded, at the request of NIST staff, to include business students and other non-science students. Since its creation in 2012, 115 students have participated in the program, with more than half of them being asked to stay for more than the original first semester.
