Central American Metrology (CAMET) Workshop on Renewable Energy and Climate Science for the Americas: Metrology and Technology Challenges
The workshop, held in Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 28 – 29, 2014, was the second in a series of conferences to be held with the 5 SIM sub-regions. The workshop identified many important opportunities for the region as they relate to renewable energy and climate science:
- Measurement capabilities for air quality and GHG emissions are limited and are in need of improvement in Central American countries.
- A hands-on training workshop for GHG measurements from fixed and mobile emission sources was identified as a priority item.
- Improving energy efficiency of buildings as well as industrial systems will have immediate impact on a country's energy demand and GHG emissions.
- Photovoltaic energy systems are finding increasing use in Central American countries, supplementing fossil-fuel based energy generation systems. CAMET members recognized the need for improved measurement capabilities to evaluate the performance of photovoltaic devices.
- Regional coordination amongst materials and members will need to be strengthened to address the priorities identified and more efficiently utilize limited resources.
