Abstract
This chapter is concerned with the use of the single pulse shock tube for studying the mechanisms and rate constants for the decomposition of polyatomic molecules at elevated temperatures. It begins with a discussion of the technique. The requirements and limitation of the methodology are discussed. Evidence for the reliability of the procedure is presented. Distinction is made between studies which deal with the details of the overall decomposition process and those that emphasize the measurement of a single rate constant with high accuracy. A series of tables summarizes the experimental results that have been accumulated. The significance of these results in the context of chemical kinetics and high temperature chemistry in general is discussed.Citation
