Abstract
This chapter offers a comprehensive summary of current understanding in boundary lubrication and the formation of boundary lubricating films. Classical and modern definitions of boundary lubrication are presented which serve to define the scope of boundary lubrication within the broader fields of lubrication and tribology. The key characteristics that control the lubrication mechanisms in this regime are defined. The role of surfaces in boundary lubrication are explained, from topographic to surface chemical contributions. Lubrications and their reactions are discussed, leading into a detailed discussion of how boundary lubricating films are characterized and measured.
