Chemical transformations of organic molecules have a critical presence in the petrochemical, specialty materials, and pharmaceutical sectors, generating nearly $1 trillion in revenue each year. Electrochemistry stands uniquely poised to revolutionize the chemical industry by replacing exhaustible feedstocks, like fossil fuels, with the greenhouse gas, CO2. For this vision to become reality, explicit understanding of dynamic interactions at sensitive material/catalyst surface sites with reaction intermediates and surrounding molecules must be achieved. Such understanding will permit tuning of chemical reactivity, durability, and selectivity of these materials and maturation of commercial technologies. My research leverages nanotechnology synthesis strategies, novel in-situ spectroscopy, spectrometry, and microscopy to comprehensively study chemical reactions and events at heterogeneous interfaces allowing for a comprehensive understanding of atomic events at interfaces.
