Welcome Tobias (Toby) Herman!

Byline: Katrice Lippa and David Sefcik

Headshot of Toby Herman for OWM Detail

OWM is pleased to have Tobias (Toby) Herman from the Physical Measurement Laboratory at NIST join us on a 1-year detail assignment with the Laboratory Metrology program.

As a research physicist, Toby has deep expertise in temperature and humidity metrology, has coordinated NIST calibration services for temperature and humidity over the past 8 years, and has led the rebuild of the laboratory responsible for the primary realization of the kelvin from 84 K to 1235 K. Toby also worked as an adjunct physics professor at Montgomery College in Maryland, where he developed, implemented, and delivered introductory physics and STEM courses to a wide range of students. When the possibility of a secondment to the OWM Laboratory Metrology program was posted, Toby saw it as a perfect opportunity to combine his passion for teaching, metrology training, and STEM outreach activities, and a chance to work with the U.S. metrology community outside the walls of NIST.

Toby has already met some of the laboratory metrology community at the recent SEMAP in Annapolis, MD this past March. His focus for the next year will be on innovations for the Fundamentals of Metrology course and developing thermometry materials for the 2025 combined regional measurement assurance program meeting, but he will be actively involved in all aspects of the Laboratory Metrology program. He is looking forward to engaging further with the laboratory metrology community, both here at NIST for metrology training courses and at upcoming regional measurement assurance program (RMAPS) group meetings.

Welcome, Toby, and we are excited to have you join OWM!
