Abstract
The harmonization of international dishwasher test procedures is a global target. Currently in the US, manufacturers are working with the Department of Energy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop an alternative testing approach to address testing issues related to new technological developments. However, advancement has been slowed due in part to the significant differences in dishwasher design, consumer practices and market forces for each country. In addition, there is a varied impact for the countries involved, specifically contrasting countries who have voluntary participation in labeling and energy efficiency regulation with those who have mandated minimum energy/ and or performance standards. An overview of the existing and proposed standards, along with an understanding of the current state of the art in dishwasher design can promote a better understanding of the issues that must be resolved. This paper will make a comparison of the US and International test procedures, looking at what has been proposed, who is involved/affected, and highlighting key issues concerning manufacturers, environmentalists, and the US Department of Energy.
