What Does it Take to Make Good Things Happen?

Abstract

The theme of this symposium is fire risk and hazard assessment research application. We tend to focus on the tools which in themselves are means to some end, what are the ends we are trying to address? A central question regarding this topic must be who needs them? Or, perhaps more to the point, who is asking for them? The central point of this paper is that those of us who develop and promote these tools have not done a very good job of demonstrating their benefits or value added to the user. The paper offers a set of five imperatives which we need to address in so doing: attitude, vision, motivation, sufficiency, and persistence. Last year's keynoter proposed a specific action plan for addressing the issue of application of fire risk and hazard assessment. No action has been taken on that proposal. This presentation repeats that worthy proposal and challenges the symposium participants to do something about it this time.
