Rather than attempt a comprehensive review of the state of the art in robotics, a monumental task in this rapidly moving field that encompasses so many diverse technical disciplines, I want instead to set forth a few central research topics which I believe will dominate the research community and largely occupy the attention of researchers for the rest of this century. In the course of my remakes I will cite a number of examples to illustrate the type of problems that have been, and will be encountered in each of these research areas. But I make no claim that these examples provide a comprehensive overview of the field, or are even necessarily representative of the bulk of work currently on-going in the world today.
