Abstract
This paper reviews the role provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the development of measurements in support of broadcast news-based technologies. The focus of these measurements was initially on specifying the word error rates for large vocabulary Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technologies, but recently the focus has broadened to address the application of ASR technologies to multi-media-based Information Retrieval (IR) and Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) applications. In all cases the tests are based on broadcast news corpora made available through the Linguistic Data Consortium. These measurements provide insights into technical challenges that must be addressed in the development of News on Demand demonstration systems.Citation
