Abstract

The BMIS Coordinating Committee organized a workshop on September 19 and 20, 2002, in Gaithersburg, MD, to evaluate the role of the Federal Government in extracting and disseminating information gained from explanted medical implants to provide information for safer health care. As a follow-up to recommendations identified through the workshop held in January 200, this workshop focused on issues related to patient education and information about implants and implant retrieval. The committee is chaired by Dr. John Watson, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and is composed a number of individuals at various NIH Institutes as well as representatives from the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other organizations.
