Abstract

The partial phase diagrams of Ag with the constituent oxides of the Pb-BSCCO system (Pb,Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu:O) have been investigated, with emphasis on initial melting. These diagrams include the binary systems Ag-SrO, Ag-CaO, Ag-CuO, Ag-Bi2O3, Ag-PbO, and the pseudo-binary system Ag-Pb2223. In the latter system, dissolution of Ag into the Pb-BSCCO liquid occurrs at a mole fraction of 2.8% under 7.5 volume % O2, for the bulk composition investigated. A total mole fraction of 3% - 4% metal oxides was found to dissolve contact with the Pb2223 liquid during one-hour experiments. The amount of dissolution appears to increase slightly with increasing oxygen partial pressure. These interactions could lead to significant chemical modification at the Ag/Pb2223 superconductor interface.
