Hardness Testing of Ceramics

Abstract

An overview of hardness testing of ceramics is presented. Conventional test methods are discussed, particularly with respect to major sources of experimental error and standardization. Two NIST Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) are highlighted. Emerging technologies include instrumented hardness and research into the influence of cracking on hardness.
