Ultrasonic Melt Temperature Measurement During Extrusion

Abstract

An ultrasonics sensor, which can be used at polymer processing temperatures, was developed and used to monitor temperature of a polymer extrudate. This was accomplished by establishing a calibration function between the measured ultrasonics velocity and the pressure and temperature of the resin. Real time measurements were carried out for the ultrasonics sensor attached to the exit die of an extruder. Ultrasonics temperature measurements were compared with thermocouple and fluorescence based temperature measurements.
