Abstract

Our field, solid-sold phase transformations, grew out of ancient crafts with their own paradigms. The creation of new paradigms has been a slow process with many false starts. Much remains to be done. An examination of the successes and failures of the past should give us a better understanding of where we are and why it has taken so long.
