A Sample Geometry for Controlled In Situ TEM Straining Experiments on Brittle and Semi-Brittle Materials

Abstract

A novel in situ TEM sample geometry has been developed for the controlled deformation and fracture of brittle and semi-brittle materials inside the TEM. It consists of a conventionally prepared TEM sample attached to a copper tensile bar containing a large hole. Sample alignment and unintended deformation problems typically encountered with present geometries are eliminated, and the test specimen's performance with a number of material systems is discussed.
