Abstract

We investigate theoretically the properties of a trapped gas of fermionic atoms both in the normal and the superfluid phase. A detailed analysis including the shell structure of the normal phase spectrum exactly, leads to the proposal of two observables which should indicate the presence of the superfluid: The response of the gas to a modulation of the trapping frequency and the heat capacity. Our results are directly relevant to ongoing experiments on trapped Fermi gases.
