Author(s)

Abstract

This book suggests that a computational theory of mind is emerging that will enable the engineering of mind. It briefly traces the history of scientific interest in the mind and puts into perspective recent advances in knowledge about the brain. It brings together into a coherent framework key concepts from a wide variety of disciplines such as the neurosciences, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and control theory. A reference model architecture is proposed and elaborated as a basis for engineering intelligent systems. An example is presented of how this reference model is being applied to the development of an intelligent system architecture for a military unmanned ground vehicle. Finally, some estimates are made of the potential for future progress in the engineering of mind and the possible effects this might have on science, economics, national defence, and human well being.
