Abstract

A survey was conducted to assess the reference materials and collections that were available in forensic laboratories to determine which were not available and in greatest demand. This report presents the results of that survey. The survey included laboratories from every region of the United States. The laboratories surveyed ranged in size and the services provided, from small, single-service drug analysis facilities to full-service labs. More than half were state crime laboratories. The majority of the laboratories surveyed were accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Director's Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB). The survey found widespread support among laboratory directors for the creation of a national repository for standard reference materials and standard reference collections.
